MODULE 01 · FOUNDATIONS

Dashboard Overview & Settings

Now that your site is live, it's time to get comfortable in wp-admin — the control room you'll return to for every lesson from here on.

Day 3 of 30 Beginner ~20 min

Welcome to wp-admin

Every action you take on a WordPress site — writing a post, changing a theme, installing a plugin — happens through one place: the wp-admin dashboard. Today's lesson is a guided tour so nothing in later lessons feels unfamiliar.

You don't need to memorize every menu item today. The goal is just to know what each area is for, so you can find your way back to it later.

What Each Menu Item Actually Controls

The left sidebar is where almost everything happens. Here's what you'll actually use in this course.

MENU ITEM WHAT IT'S FOR
Posts

Blog-style content, shown newest first — articles, updates, news.

Pages

Standalone content like "Home," "About," or "Contact" that isn't time-based.

Media

Every image, video, or file you've ever uploaded, in one library.

Appearance

Themes, menus, and widgets — controls how the site looks and is structured.

Plugins

Installed add-ons that extend what WordPress can do.

Users

Everyone with a login to your site, and what they're allowed to do.

Settings

Site-wide configuration — title, tagline, URL structure, and more.

DON'T WORRY YET

Posts, Pages, Plugins, and Appearance each get their own full lesson soon. Today is just about knowing where things live.

What "Settings" Is Actually Storing

The Settings menu doesn't change how your site looks — it changes the underlying configuration WordPress uses to run the site correctly.

general-settings.txt
// Settings → General
Site Title // shown in browser tabs and search results
Tagline // a short description of your site
WordPress Address // the URL WordPress core files live at
Site Address // the URL visitors actually see
Timezone // affects post dates and scheduling

Your Dashboard Walkthrough

Log into wp-admin and work through these in order — this is the tour.

  • Look at the top toolbar — it shows your site name, a "New" menu, and your account, no matter what page you're on.
  • Open the Dashboard home screen — a quick snapshot of activity, drafts, and site health.
  • Click through each sidebar item once — Posts, Pages, Media, Appearance, Plugins, Users, Settings.
  • Open Settings → General — set your site title and tagline if you haven't already.
  • Set your timezone — under Settings → General, so scheduled content posts at the right time later in the course.
  • The Distinction You'll Use Constantly

This is the single most common point of confusion for beginners, so it's worth locking in early.

POSTS Time-based, listed newest-first, organized with categories and tags. Think blog articles or news updates.
PAGES Standalone and timeless, usually part of your site's permanent navigation. Think "About" or "Contact."

    Confirming Your Settings Are Correct

    SETTINGS CHECK
SITE TITLE Set to something real — not the default "My WordPress Site."
PERMALINKS Under Settings → Permalinks, "Post name" gives cleaner, more readable URLs than the default.
TIMEZONE If left on UTC by mistake, scheduled posts can publish at unexpected times.

Breaking Down What You Just Learned

    3. Switch your Permalink structure to "Post name" under Settings → Permalinks.
    4. Click through Posts, Pages, Media, Appearance, Plugins, and Users once each.
